It is more than just “Sweet Dreams” now for a local couple, Mitch and Gina Dissinger and their family. Their aspiration to open up a restaurant finally came true this past June after many months of remodeling a section of the former Kauffman’s Hardware Store. “Lickity Split,” also now known as “The Town Scoop,” is located at 209 East Main Street, New Holland.
In the midst of pursuing a job replacement, the family decided to seize the opportunity to expand the “Lickity Split” Ice Cream Truck business. The Dissinger Family has many years of experience in the food industry as well as a family who delights in entertaining guests and catering parties. Lickity Split, a vintage ice cream, soup and sandwich parlor on Main Street, opened on June 24th with full intentions of revitalizing good old New Holland.
The family purchased the business “Lickity Split” from another local couple in 2006, which at that time was a vintage mobile ice cream truck. In 2008 a second 24 ft. truck was added to help with larger venues. It seemed like a natural progression for the family to expand their business. Many friends had encouraged them for years to pursue this idea.
Old-fashioned charm and Nostalgia can be seen in the 1,100-square-foot facility. The 11-foot-high ceilings and fans, preserved hardwood floor, stained glass windows, saloon-style door to the kitchen, and original general store shelving all aid in the character of the restaurant.
The restaurant recalls the history of New Holland from days gone by in various forms. From the table tops laminated with copies of the former town newspaper, The New Holland Clarion, a 10 foot mural of Main street from the 1800s to a computerized slide show depicting over 100 pictures of New Holland.
Patrons can choose from two pages of desserts full of frozen treats. With Leiby’s hand dipped premium ice cream, there is something to satisfy every craving. Among the treats are generous scoops of ice cream, milkshakes, banana splits, sundaes, old fashioned floats, Italian water ice, hot waffle sandwiches and more; all served up in vintage glass dishes. The family carefully selected a menu of unique, mouth watering sandwiches, hearty soups , and fresh salads. Each item was named specifically to reflect historical New Holland; sandwiches like the “Garden Spot Melt,” “Rubinson’s Wrap,” and the “Kauffman’s Cuban.”
Promoting community spirit, the staff decided to have “community Fridays” where they will wear donated t-shirts of local businesses to advertise and support them. (Lickity Split is excited to showcase your local business!) The restaurant also features a monthly “Keep the change jar” where 100% of the proceeds benefit a local charity or ministry.
Lickity Split is pleased to announce their Grand Opening on Friday September 24 and Saturday September 25, 2010.
Come on in for delicious food, fun, live music, face painting and specials. The restaurant is open from 11Am to 9PM on both days. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be on Friday evening at 6:00 with New Holland’s own Mayor Wilbur Horning. Look for the“Lickity Lou” cow mascot to make an appearance as well!
The building is loaded with history, atmosphere, positive energy, old fashioned ice cream parlor charm, delicious dishes and plenty of fun. Come in and check it out for yourself. Not just a place to eat, but a destination that’s worth coming to again, and again. Plenty of parking is available in the back and nearby areas, with a handicapped ramp inside the back door. So stop on by and say hi to Mitch, Gina, Danielle, Justin and their awesome staff.
